Welcome to this website
This website is an initiative of the NSW Local Government Rangers & Parking Patrol Officers Taskforce on Safety. By providing website resources the taskforce aims to:
- help improve safety outcomes,
- encourage collaborative work to reduce and prevent exposure to occupational violence,
- increase public understanding of the role of rangers and parking patrol officers.
What do rangers and parking patrol officers do?
Local government rangers and parking patrol officers perform an array of duties which are beneficial to the community. For information about their role CLICK HERE.
Why focus on safety?
There are risks associated with their role of rangers and parking patrol officers. This may be made more difficult as a result of negative media, increased population and road congestion, competing community expectations, insufficient community understanding about their role or encounters with irate members of the public.
It is imperative that employers and employees fulfil their a duty of care in ensuring a safe work environment. When councils work to protect the health and safety of all employees, improvements will not only benefit employees but also their families, the councils and the broader community.
Addressing safety issues
Activities addressing safety issues can include, but not be limited to: access to training, consultation with staff, where appropriate rostering officers to work in pairs, liaising with the Police for improved backup systems, emergency communication systems, improved support mechanisms, access to counselling services, attention to incident reporting, risk assessment, post incident management and team support.
There can be considerable benefit from sharing information, resources and highlighting best practice models as well as upgrading reporting. Councils and employees can be part of this process through their involvement with participating Taskforce organisations.
About the Taskforce
The taskforce was established in 2009 and includes a broad range of stakeholders. It seeks to identify and promote best practice in the safety and wellbeing of council rangers, and parking patrol officers. It is also envisaged that these efforts will benefit other Council workers, particularly authorised officers and other officers with compliance and law enforcement functions. The Taskforce also works to improve public understanding of the positive role of the officers and the contribution they make to the community and the environmental in which we all live.
